1001 Uniqueness of Nature in Indonesia
VALLEY OF BALIEM
In Indonesia we can called " Lembah Baliem ". The Baliem Valley is a valley in the Jayawijaya mountains. The Baliem Valley is located at an altitude of 1600 meters from the sea level, which is surrounded by mountains with beautiful scenery and still natural. The temperature can reach 10-15 degrees celcius at night. The Baliem Valley is home to the ethnic group of Dani, Yali, and Lani. Located in the vicinity of Jayawijaya mountain, which includes the most beautiful mountain in Indonesia.
The valley has a low temperature, but is worth the viewable scenery along the way. The journey to the Baliem valley is difficult, however, we can reach it by plane from the city of Jayapura and head straight to the city of Wamena, the main town in the Baliem.
The landscape around the Baliem valley is native to civilization in the stone age, and many places can only be accessed by bicycle or on foot. Rural around the valley can be a major tourist attraction, because we can travel while peering at the life of the people of Baliem who still maintain the traditional image. One that can not escape from the Wamena region is a 400 year old mummy standing in the Akima area, about 20 kilometers from Wamena.
Dani's tribal chief, Eli Mabel, is holding the remains of a mummy or 'Agat Mamate Mabel' in the village of Wogi, Wamena, West Papua.
Baliem has a Festival Event too.
Baliem Valley Festival event, is a war between Dani, Lani, and Yali. Inter-tribal war is certainly safe to watch. Even this festival event attracted the attention of local and world tourists. The event lasts for 3 days and is held every August before the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day.
This attraction has a positive meaning for the people of the Baliem Valley is 'yogotak hubuluk motog hanaro' which means 'hope for tomorrow that must be better than today.
And there is a unic tradition in Baliem. The sad expression of loss of relatives for the Dani tribe in the Baliem Valley is by cutting a finger (ikipalin). This is the symbol of the pain and pain they feel. Because for the Dani, the fingers symbolize harmony, unity, and strength in man.
Cutting this finger can be done with a sharp object, bitten to break or tie it with a string until the finger off and after it just cut. It sounds very horrible indeed. However, as the times progressed, the action of the finger cut was further abandoned.
In addition to cut fingers, there is also a mud bath action that gives meaning that every human who dies will return to the ground.
There may still be a lot of wealth that Indonesia has in concession like Baliem, and we as the nation's successor must be able to maintain and preserve the culture we have.
